METHODOLOGY

How Hobby Pulse Works

Hobby Pulse measures coverage, not popularity. Its foundation is unusual coverage over the last seven days compared with the topic’s expected seven-day activity based on the preceding 30 days. Headline mentions receive full scoring weight, while description-only mentions receive half weight; each article can contribute only once to a topic. Sustained topics need at least two independent sources when the topic appears in a headline, or at least three sources when discovered only in descriptions. A separate 24-hour signal detects breaking coverage and can boost a sustained trend or admit a new breaking topic, requiring at least two independent sources.

The Pulse Score combines mention volume, deviation from baseline, independent-source breadth, publication-type breadth, and recent acceleration. Topics are labeled Sustained, Breaking, Surging, or Sustained + Rising to show why they are appearing. It is designed to surface unusual coverage rather than permanently rank large companies or famous players at the top. All results are generated deterministically from the Wire archive; AI is not used to calculate the rankings.
